What Makes Me Proud: Acts of Kindness - The Villa Maria Soccer Team Makes a Wish Come True

There is a great emphasis, perhaps too much of an emphasis, on our youth performing like professional athletes on the high school sports fields, tracks, courts, and pitches. Endless hours of preparation focused solely on winning on the field. To be sure, the 2008 Villa Maria Academy High School soccer team was quite successful last Fall on the pitch, winning their league and moving on to districts for the first time in their history, but what made them champions was not what occurred in the Fall, but rather what occurred in the Spring of 2009. Villa Maria Academy is a small all girls Catholic private school located in Malvern, Pennsylvania. Every girl plays on multiple athletic teams throughout the school year. Every team is required to do some level of community service. The coach of the soccer team, Gary Christopher, decided to set a rather ambitious goal for the soccer team's community service. He wanted the team to grant the wish of an ill child through the Make a Wish Foundation program. He set a goal for these girls to raise $10,000 so that the little girl and her family from the Philadelphia area would be able to go to Disney World. So as the players were participating in other sports, the seniors focused on college acceptances and graduation, this monumentous task was placed before them. In April 2009, the girls came together and were able to raise not $10,000, but over $14,000. Not only did they grant the wish of the one little girl, two more children were able to have their wishes come true. If you are a coach of a youth athletic club, teach your players a true life lesson. Commit your team to doing some community work for the benefit of others. They will suprise you with how they can move mountains. |
